On 1st World War, many soldiers in the trenches remained for a long time. Often happens with the rain and the decomposing body disease. Trench foot was just one of many diseases. Infantry trench foot rot to the letter, it was very painful and can cause other illnesses. Many soldiers were from rat, literally, eaten in the trenches, who lived were also killed by the gas that eventually move into the trenches after the war and most of the gases that are detectable. The soldiers were hit by pieces of bombs and bullets beasue were very similar, ducks sittign in the trenches.
Shmoop History of World War I
Trenches were really terrible places to live and die. To the death of people, all day, every day. Man killed by artillery and other assets were buried where they fell into the ditch of millions of rats multiply and feed on decaying corpses, the food was cold and sometimes rainy and flooding underground hardened men were weeks and is constantly being bombarded and the opposing party shot. The empty gaze of the man from the front was the original "neurosis." The only thing everyone agrees on the on the western front, that there is no way to adequately describe how the trenches were hellish.
